Introduction

Think of "Business Strategy" as the development and utilization of characteristics or qualities that set your business apart from others in your market.

In other words, the ways you compete in your market. Why customers buy from you and not others - those attributes that make you unique. Well, what are those attributes? And do they really work for you? Are they unique enough? Do they give you a competitive advantage in today's market? Do they keep you excited and energized about your business? Find out the answers to these questions and more by completing Strategy Development Scorecard.

Strategy Development Scorecard is divided into three parts:

In Part I you will identify all of the ways you currently "choose" to compete in your industry. These "strategic choices" will be classified into categories representing the nine different ways for-profit companies compete. You will also describe up to five different issues or challenges facing your business today. You will then have an opportunity to list and edit your strategic choices and challenges, save them on this website for future use and print them out to review at your leisure.

In Part 2 you will distinguish what we call your "default business strategy"; that is, the strategic choices in which your company has consistently invested its management time and resources. We assert that your company is defined by what it does or takes action on, with time and money being a fairly reliable barometer of that action. You will be able to list, print and/or store on this website the choices that represent your "default business strategy".

In Part 3 you will have an opportunity to rate the effectiveness of your "default business strategy" from five different perspectives: Focus, Leverage, Competitiveness, Motivation and On Purpose. You will also be given a composite rating that can be compared to all of the other companies participating in this exercise or by those in your type of business and/or industry group. Again, you will be able to print and revise your scores; and if you save your data on this website, revise them at a future date.

Strategy Development Scorecard has been designed for you to begin thinking strategically about your business and to track the competitiveness of your business strategy as you go through the strategic decision-making process.

The answers to the questions that follow will not be available to anyone else and will be password protected. At the end of the assessment you will have the option of destroying the data (Only the anonymous scores by business type and industry group will remain as part of our data base.) or storing it for future use. If you plan to use the Chart Your Own Course methodology to strengthen your competitive advantage, this information will be part of the source data used in that process. For that reason we urge you not to destroy the data. None of your "entered" data will ever be available to others without your consent.
